Gate Sour

If you know your horse is gate sour then it should be easy to fix. However, that doesn’t mean you will only have to address it once. One of our WEG horses, Petey, tests the “gate” in every new arena. Think about it from their point of view – usually going in through a gate means work and exiting means rest. Who wouldn’t want to go to the place that leads to rest?

Success Tips:

- You can try the ear flick technique first.

Common Problems/Mistakes:

- Thinking that working on it in one arena will take care of every arena.
Common Mistake: Riding out the gate. We always get off and walk through the gate unless we are forbidden to at a show. We may remount and continue riding so that they don't think there is automatic rest outside the gate.
