Day 9 – Breathe With Your Horse

Day 9 – Breathe With Your Horse

The “Breathe with Your Horse” Exercise is a powerful way to sync your nervous system with your horse’s natural rhythm, promoting calm, trust, and connection. Horses are highly attuned to human emotions, and when you breathe deeply and steadily, it signals safety and relaxation, helping you both feel more at ease.

How It Works:

Regulates Both Rider and Horse’s Nervous System:
When anxious, riders often hold their breath or breathe shallowly, which the horse can sense.
Deliberate breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, signaling relaxation to both horse and rider.

Creates a Deeper Bond Between Horse and Rider:
Horses naturally synchronize their breath with herd members as a sign of connection and safety.
When a rider breathes intentionally, the horse is more likely to mirror this calm state.

Improves Rhythm, Focus, and Relaxation in the Saddle:
Matching breath to movement improves timing in gaits and transitions.
This also helps riders stay present, preventing overthinking and tension.

How to Do It:
👉 “Breathe with Your Horse” Exercise

Option 1: On the Ground
Stand next to your horse and place a hand on their shoulder or chest.
Observe their natural breathing rhythm.
Begin matching your breath to their inhale and exhale, allowing your body to slow down.

Option 2: In the Saddle
At the Walk: Count 4 steps inhale, 6 steps exhale.
At the Trot: Inhale for 4 beats, exhale for 4-6 beats to stay soft and relaxed.
At the Canter: Breathe in during the upbeat, exhale during the downbeat, flowing with your horse.

Bonus: If your horse is anxious, let out an audible sigh or deep exhale, and notice if they respond by relaxing.

🛑Use this technique before, during, or after a ride to enhance relaxation, rhythm, and trust with your horse.

Reflection Questions:

  • What did you observe about your horse’s breathing patterns?
  • How did synchronizing your breath with your horse’s movement influence your connection?
  • Can you identify moments when this synchronization improved your riding experience?
